PRESTON COMMUNITY GARDEN

What would a community garden do for you?

v   Satisfy an itchy green thumb

v   Fulfill your urge to dig in the dirt

v   Introduce you to organic gardening

v   Provide a low cost family activity

v   Enable you to contribute to the local food bank

v   Provide a sunny space to expand your current gardening activity

v   Connect you with others who enjoy the outdoors

Preston Parks and Recreation is collaborating with several interested residents to organize a Community Garden in Preston.  Our proposed garden site has ample sunshine, a convenient water source, and lots of fertile soil available.  Depending upon the individual interests of respondents, we may offer leased plots, a communal section for the food bank, and raised beds for gardeners with physical limitations.

Our projected spring schedule looks like this:

Ground breaking, April 18

Preparation of the Garden, April 25

Planning/Planting of Plots, May 16

Planting of Communal Plot, May 23.

All of these dates are flexible, depending on the wants and needs of interested gardeners.

Help Wanted:  Experienced gardener to act as coordinator for this project.  Contact the Parks and Recreation Office at (860)889-2482 x113 for details regarding this position.

The Preston City Congregational Church is setting up a food pantry to meet the needs of people in the community. Donations of non-perishable foods can be placed in the boxes placed at the church itself, the town hall, the library, and the transfer station. Look for the colorful toucan, reminding people that “two cans” would be better than one. In addition, toucan donation containers will be placed in Preston businesses, for monetary donations. Monies will be used to fill special needs and some fresh food items (e.g. eggs). For further information, visit the town’s web site www.preston-ct.org, call the church at 887-4647, or the food pantry’s co-chairmen, Stella Dawley, 887-6452 and Harriet Rosiene, 889-0238.
